I first heard about PMP when I was still in grad school. Since then, I have been trying to learn more about the certification itself on what it is, how to apply it and the most important, does it do any good to my career?
After moving back to Taiwan, I found that companies in Taiwan do evaluate certification more than I expected. While working in IBM, continues learning was one of the key element the management would like to see everyone participating. I know I want to get the PMP certification, but I am not sure how and where to start with. Seeing many colleagues passing the exam, and became a certified PMP, I kind of narrow down my searching criteria and getting closer to my goal.
From the point I receive the material package, I got the feeling I can’t get wrong with PM ABC. The study materials are very organized and comprehensive, small things like the highlighter shows they do care about detail. Most of the people have pass the examination soon after the class or even before the class ended.
For me, to pass the examination means a lot different than what it does to other students. Despite the language barrier, the fast pace and key-word learning style which I am not familiar with has become the greatest challenge to me. I have to admit, I am a slow learner, and it does take a lot of hands-on experiences to build up the knowledge base. So in order to catch up with the team, I had to change the way I study for the exam.
In the world of PMIism, there are 6 different development phases a new team will go through. Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning, I think our team is a perfect example of this process. 2 weeks before the end of the PMP class, I had to leave to US for a business trip. It was a critical moment for all the students. Our teammates has help to take the notes and keep the materials. Team lead, Gina also helped to track everyone’s progress
Just like what the PM ABC said, becoming a certified PMP is just the beginning of the journey. Our job is to apply the proper PMP knowledge and methods and combining them with real world experience. I am very happy that I made the right choice on PM ABC.
